Pharmacy bottles were made in England from the late sixteenth century and most of the glass vials of Colonial America came from England. A glass factory was established in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 and one was in operation at Salem, Massachusetts in 1639. However the output of bottles from Colonial factories was meager during the early seventeenth century and most pharmacy glassware continued to be imported from England.
