Every apothecary shop would have at least one mortar & pestle for grinding, pulverizing, and mixing drugs and eventually they became symbolic of pharmacy.  Examples can be found made of stone, iron, marble, ivory, brass, glass, wood and in many shapes.  Lignum Vitae forms were typically used in early apothecary shops, but rarely since the early 18th century and since then generally for domestic purposes.
