Apart from the many medicine cups and spoons intended for personal use, there was growing interest from the mid-18th century directed towards greater accuracy and precision in the preparation and dispensing of medicines.  Accordingly, there was movement away from the traditional brass, pewter, and wood measures from previous centuries and a growing demand for precision that only glass could readily provide.
