Leech Misrepresentations

$4.99

All manner of “Aquaria” were produced by manufacturers of glassware for druggists and chemists.  Some of these forms, particularly thehanging and footed globes, have been subsequently misrepresented as leech jars for physicians. However, although not originally intended for this purpose they may have served as a suitable and inexpensive alternative to the more expensive ceramic leech jars of the period.  In their 1905 catalog the Whitall Tatum Company offered Fish Globesthat were either footed orsuspended by chains.  The former was offered in sizes ranging from 1 quart to 4 gallons while the latter was availablein ½ pint to 3 gallon sizes.  Also available were oblong aquaria on decorative bases as well as rounded and bell-shaped forms.
