Unlike nipple shields, Glass Nipple Shells were intended to fit over the nipple and beneath undergarments to provide protection from the irritating effects of overlying clothing and to capture any milk that might be produced between feedings.  Worn with the drain hole positioned upward milk was collected and when placed in a dependent position the device could readily be emptied and cleaned.
