Barnes’s Cranioclast was predicated on the designs of his predecessors, particularly J.Y. Simpson and included an “elbow” on the inner surfaces of the base of the blades to accommodate the scalp fold and thus permit for a better grip.  He also added a screw at the proximal end of the handles to provide fixation of the jaws.  The lower jaw is fenestrated.
