Cranioclasts had their origin in Britain and were not introduced until some time after cephalotribes were in general use in Europe.  They were essentially large-bladed craniotomy forceps of diverse and functional designs intended to crush the base of the skull to ease removal of the head aftercraniotomy.   Correspondence in the medical press of the time suggests much rivalry as to who could deliver through the most contracted pelvis.
