A particularly early and rare example of Meigs’ classic pattern in both straight and curved forms as illustrated on page 238 of Meigs’ - The Philadelphia Practice of Midwifery - 1838.   Marked “PHILA” and constructed of un-plated steel.  The outer two-thirds of the jaws being provided with prominent transverse teeth. The earliest example by an American maker that this collector has seen.
