Embryotomy forceps were required in cases of incomplete spontaneous abortion when retained fetal or placental tissues produce cramping and, at times, hemorrhage.  Certainly, there were times when elective or therapeutic abortion were considered and which required surgical intervention.  A great many instruments were developed for this purpose including all manner of forceps and curettes.
