Wedge-scissors perforators were introduced by William Smellie in the mid-eighteenth century. These were cumbersome and often required two hands to operate.  To further facilitate single-handed operation designs such as these were introduced, usually without a crossover joint but with a spring-loaded handle to keep the handles apart and the blades in apposition.
