A variety of instruments were designed for the inspection and evaluation of the anterior nasal cavities.  These typically consist of valves or blades provided with a mechanism for dilating the flexible portion of the nostril.  Tubular patterns have been designed but were not popular.  Although self-retaining models were offered, they frequently slipped out of place when bloodied during an operation.
