Published when he was only twenty-nine years old, Andreas Vesalius, 1514-1564, revolutionized both the science and teaching of anatomy by providing a fuller and more detailed account of human anatomy than any of his predecessors, correcting errors in the traditional teachings of Galen, A.D. 130-200, and arguing that knowledge of human anatomy was to come only from the dissections on humans by physicians. - a direct contradiction of the medieval doctrine that dissections be performed by menials while the physician lectured from the traditional authorities.  This “hands-on” principle remains Vesalius’s most lasting contribution followed by his novel and unprecedentedblending of art, scientific expression, and typography.
