Porcelain spoons with recurved handles allowing them to stand firmly for filling, appeared by the middle of the nineteenth century.  White earthenware ones followed in profusion, and these sometimes had feet and were occasionally half covered.  Common forms were mostly plain white, but some had floral decoration, gilt borders, and dosage rings marked in the bowl indicating table, dessert, and tea.
