Floating bath thermometers made to Dr. Forbes Specifications could be purchased in the 1895 Montgomery Ward Catalog No. 57, page 213, item No.24145 for forty-eight cents. A fine working example with a simple mercury-in-glass thermometer with adjacent scale extends from 10-150 degrees Fahrenheit and with Dr. Forbes’ Specifications:  ‘Freezing’ ‘Cold Bath’, ‘Cool’, ‘Tepid’, ‘Warm’, and ‘Hot’.  The thermometer is held in place by a cork in the bottom of the wood housing.
