Flat Boat-shaped Suckling Bottles appeared towards the end of the 18th century and were popular for the first half of the 19th century. These were filled from a central hole on the top, which was covered by the thumb during feeding to control the flow through a short spout to which a teat would have been attached. Such bottles were manufactured by most of the Staffordshire potteries in plain and decorated forms.
