On occasions, when the placenta is not spontaneously expelled, it needs removed by artificial means.  While the use of specialized instruments is rarely required, the fact remains that there was a large demand for placental extractors.  As a result, an amazing variety of instruments were conceived for that purpose including: curettes, scoops, hooks, and others in an attempt to bring something novel to the operation.
