Earle designed a simple device comprised of two curved blades (to follow the sacrum), with terminal bulbs and a spring-loaded handle with measuring plate extending from a hinge on the inferior handle and extending through a fenestration in the superior handle.  Earle claimed greater accuracy, facility of application and little inconvenience. A fine example of Earle’s earlier form, silver plated, signed W.H.
