Tiemann’s Patent Scarificator, American, mid-19th century, signed - “G. TIEMANN N - YORK, Patented Aug. 20th 1846.”  Made of brass and steel, with a finely shaped horn handle, the instrument is 16.5 cm. long, and features 12 blades, adjustable depth control, cocking plunger, and thumb trigger.  A distinctive American design, with a coiled spring inside the handle.  George Tiemann claimed ease of handling and cleaning, and an improved diagonal cut of the blades.  Complete with its original black leatherette covered case, velvet lined and bearing a label of complete instructions.
