The hardwood pill finisher consists of a circular piece of wood with a smooth rolling area and a projecting rim of two different dimensions on either side so that two sizes of pill could be made.  Roughly formed pills were placed on a smooth surface and the pill finisher is placed on top and moved in a figure-of-eight fashion that resulted in a uniformly round pill.
