A native of the East Indes and Northern Africa, it is widely cultivated in the United States, and in great abundance on the north bank of the Ohio.  The part employed in medicine is the fixed oil extracted from the seeds.  Taken internally, the seeds are powerfully cathartic, and often emetic.  The oil is extracted from the seeds either by decoction, by expression or by the agency of alcohol.
