G. glabra or Licorice plant has a perennial root and is native to the Southern Europe, Syria, and Persia; and is cultivated in England, France and Germany.  The best roots are bright yellow internally and decoctions of glycyrrhizin are in various ways with use of water, acids and alcohols.
