Prepared from the root of Cocculus palmatus or Columbo or Calumb that is native to Mozambique, where it grows in great abundance and was a staple export of the Portuguese to India and thence distributed.  The virtues of the root are extracted by boiling water and alcohol to produce a tincture rich in colombin and berberin that are both likely responsible for the remedial effects of columbo.
