Mixtures of crude drugs, powdered or coarsely cut, were used under the name “species” or “teas” and were used in making infusions.  Species Jars were provided with a wide mouth and short neck and typically a japanned lid.  They date back to the late 18th century and were in use through the early 20th century.  Older examples with a pontil mark are scarce.
