Alternative methods of dealing with gross obstruction, short of Caesarian section, included primary embryotomy by means of decapitation, craniotomy, cephalotripsy and evisceration.  The object of all is to reduce the size of the fetus by compression or subdivision. Also decapitation by means of a simple chain saw was suggested by Aitken as early as 1786.
