•Athens second century AD.  This marble tombstone depicts the Athenian physician Jason, seated on a cushioned stool, bearded and dressed like a philosopher.  He is examining the abnormally enlarged abdomen of a prematurely aged child.  In a society where idealized depictions of people were far more popular, it is rare to fine realistic illustrations of medical conditions or scenes, such as this one.
•The inscription records Jason’s name and profession, the Athenian tribe he belonged to, and other members of his family.  The egg-shaped object on the right resembles a cupping vessel.
