Production of wax anatomical models for educational purposes began in the eighteenth century and peaked towards the end of the nineteenth century.  Models were typically life size, produced in an ultra-realistic style, and often in a restful repose.  Victorian standards discouraging undress gave rise to anatomical museums that offered attractive portrayals of women’s reproductive systems together with vivid and terrifying examples of the ravages of venereal and other diseases.
