The best and most satisfactory method is to cut the tonsil off as close to the pillars of the fauces as possible.  This may be done by means of a pair of forceps and a bistoury--the operation being, however, rather tedious and bloody, but strangely not painful.  A better, quicker and more safe mode of operating is by means of the ‘tonsillotome.'  Later models were electrified to provide simultaneous cautery and thus, hemostasis.
