Akuaba are wooden ritual fertility figures from Ghana and surrounding areas remain one of the most recognizable forms in African Art. The best known are those of the Ashanti people, whose akuaba have large, flat, disk-like heads, a strongly exaggerated convention of Akan beauty. Traditionally, they are consecrated by priests and carried by women either hoping to conceive a child, or to ensure the attractiveness of the child being carried. When not in use, the akuaba would be ritually washed and cared for.
