Section knives consist of blades with thin sharp edges that were employed in combination with hand microtomes in the preparation of specimens for mounting on microscope slides.  The underside of the blade was typically flat in the pattern of a microtome blade.  Both folding models and those with fixed handles similar to that of an amputation knife were available.
