Pap Boat

Pap boats likely date from the early 18th century and were in use through the end of the 19th century. Open or half-covered boat-shaped vessels with a lip at one end, were used to feed ‘pap’ to an infant or invalid. The preparation of the pap itself was from a piece of bread soaked in wine with meal and sugar and was occasionally chewed smooth by the nurse. They were made from porcelain, creamware, glazed earthenware, and have a variety of decorations to please the child.
