Smelling salt have been used since Romantimes and evidence exists of use in the 13th century by alchemists as ‘sal ammoniac.  In the 17th century, the distillation of an ammonia solution from the shavings of hart’s (deer) antlers and hooves gave rise to the term spirit or salt of hartshorn.
