Under the title “Secret Remedies” the British Medical Journal conducted an analysis of several of the most widely advertised cough medicines with the suspicion that their actual ingredients differed from the stated formula and resulted in unintended consequences. “Dr. J.W. Shafer, Morocco, Indiana, reported the death of a child, aged 23 months, following the ingestion of about one ounce of Dr. Bull’s Cough Syrup.” His preparation contained 4% alcohol and was intended for treatment of the common cold in both children and adults.  Their “analysis revealed 0.0535 grams of morphine sulphate in 100 c.c. or; about ¼ of a grain in one fluid ounce.”
