Hamilton's Revulsor

Dr. Allan McLane Hamilton’s Revulsor for use in patients with -“dysaesthesiae, spinal irritation, and other maladies, confined chiefly to women, and dependent upon uterine diseases, I found alternate use of heat and cold to be followed by the most desirable effects…In hysterical affections this mode of treatment was of great use…It consists of two chambers of brass, one with plug for adding hot water, the other with a removable top so that ice and salt may be added, and both fixed on a rod that terminates in handle.  The flat surface covered by thin flannel is placed against the bare back, on either side of the spinal processes, and the instrument is rapidly passed up and down …the effect is quite marked.  Dry heat and dry cold are much better therapeutic agents than moist…as there is no fluid between to act as a non conductor.”
