Simpson devised his “Air Tractor” in ~ 1842 as an alternative to forceps in cases of prolonged labour. Intended for use in cases where the head remained high in the pelvis, for rotations and for breech applications.  Ultimately problems maintaining sufficient suction and difficult application thwarted the device’s popularity.
