An intact package of White Silkworm Gut sutures in original wrappers by the American manufacturer Davis & Geck, Inc. Brooklyn, NY.  Kalmerid, an improved treatment for catgut to supersede iodized sutures, grew out of work by Douglas MacFarlane as described in JAMA 1914; 4 pp; and was introduced in 1916.  Packaging in glass vials permitted sterilization by a germicidal agent or by boiling.
