Ambroise Pare', 1510-1590, was the first to describe the use of a ligature to arrest bleeding in cases of amputation. He is remembered for his abandonment of boiling oil and the cautery in favor of ligatures, his revival of podalic version, and his invention of many surgical instruments. He was the greatest military surgeon before Larrey.  Born into poor circumstances, he became the most famous surgeon in France.
