Sims’ Sponge Holders or Sponge Probang of French and American design with ebony and German Silver handles respectively were essential in maintaining exposure prior to the advent of suction.  It consists of a nickel-plated brass rod and handle, the former terminating in two self-closing, semi-circular jaws, the opening and closing of which are controlled by a sliding ring that can be manipulated by the thumb or fingers.
