Benjamin Bell (1749-1806)  introduced his “small spring” or metacarpal/metatarsal bow saw in 1780 for the purpose of amputating fingers and toes.  He studied under Monroe at Edinburgh and was surgeon to the Royal Infirmary for 29 years.  He improved methods for amputation, introducing the “triple incision of Bell”.  A System of Surgery 1782-1787
