“For the removal of musket balls, A variety of forceps have been constructed.  A prize was given by the French Academy of Surgery to Mr. Percy for one which appears to answer extremely well.  When a leaded ball is lodged in a bone, the screw, which is contained in one of the handles, may be easily made to enter it, and it can be extracted.  This screw is so seldom needed, that it is omitted in the bullet forceps used in the service of the United States.”  - John Syng Dorsey 1823
