Sphere-point Cauteries such as these by the French maker Luer, were best suited to applications requiring delivery of intense heat in a very precise manner with limited damage to adjacent tissues as in the cautery of individual blood vessels.  The sphere functioned as a heat sink to prevent migration of heat beyond the point.
