Origins of the elevator are suggested as far back as 1000 B.C. and the first illustration by Albucasis occurred some 2000 or so years later.  Subsequently, numerous accounts and illustration are found in the literature from the 17th century and on.  The introduction of the elevator into general practice was chiefly due to the Thomas Bell (1792-1880) whose popular design introduced in 1829 enjoyed widespread use.
