Stem pessaries were devised “for rectifying uterine displacements - as anteversion and retroversion (thought to be responsible for dysmenorrhea) and consists of a stem which is introduced into the uterus;  this stem is attached to a disc on which the cervix rests.   Dunglison - Tiemann 1889.
