Charriere’s interpretation of Civiale’s Urethral Scarificator, English, mid -19th century, signed “Weiss”. The device is finely crafted with a smooth, shaped ebony handle, silver fittings, long silver tube calibrated every inch. The hollow tube encloses a encloses a steel rod, permitting a flat steel blade to be extended from the distal bulb and all controlled by a slidable flange and a clamp screw. This is an exploratory urethrotome, the bougie at the end serving to explore the urethral canal as put forth by the French surgeon Dr. Jean Civale (1792-1862, author of the 1827 book De la lithotrite)
