This consists of a tubular shaft, marked in graduations of 1 inch, that terminates at its distal end with five jointed arms.  A central rod passing through the shaft connects with the distal tip thus permitting expansion upon rotation of the thumb-wheel at the proximal end.  The degree of expansion and therefore constriction is thus clearly indicated by a marker on a quadrant scale.  Introduced in the closed position and then gradual withdrawal with increasing degrees of expansion will resolve the stricture.
