Lithotrity or Lithotripsy facilitated removal of stones from the bladder by crushing them into small fragments that can pass through the urethra.  Early instruments  for this purpose were rude and dangerous and incorporated drills and cumbersome crushing devices. In approximately 1834 curved lithotrites with jaws to open and shut were devised by Weiss, of London, and began to replace earlier forms.
