In 1900 Bossi described his better known and more robust four-bladed instrument with removable lipped caps to better maintain its position within the cervix at greater degrees of dilatation and effacement. A complex pivot and large thumbscrew arrangement served to force the blades apart and provide for a considerable mechanical advantage.  A pointer indicated the degree of dilation.
