Hysterotomes were intended for incising the interior of the cervical canal or as part of hysterotomy and trachelectomy.  “In cases of uterine stenosis, its use must be followed by daily insertion of the bougie smeared with vasiline, to prevent adhesion of the cut surfaces and consequent diminution of the caliber of the cervical canal.”  - Eaton, Diseases of Women - 1880
