Laurence Heister, 1683-1758 was professor of Physic and Surgery at the University of Helmstadtin Germany.  He introduced a more scientific approach to surgery and produced the most popular surgical text of the eighteenth century. Here Heister, illustrates digital dilation of the uterus and subsequent successful removal of a polypus by an expert midwife.  Heister1753.
