Silver and rarely gold were the materials of choice in the manufacture of Caustic Holders on account of their resistance to the highly corrosive action of caustics including Iodine, Potassium Iodide (Lugol’s), Silver Nitrate, Potash and Soda, all of which produce superficial tissue destruction and promote hemostasis.
