Non-metallic specula were useful in that they permitted application of cautery to the cervix while protecting the vaginal from thermal injury. The addition of a fenestration enhanced visualization of vesico-vaginal, and recto-vaginal fistulas and facilitated surgery on these and other vaginal sidewall lesions.
